Electric Scooter Troubleshooting
May I fix an electric scooter?
Is the first question that you make yourself. If your answer is YES you must think in:
- How is my skill level ?
- Have I the right tools ?
The scooter is not working properly.
There are several reasons for that. Take a look at some of the issues that might cause the scooter is not working.
Scooter has no power:
If the scooter’s battery is low, it will switch on, but the motor will not run and when the battery is empty, it won’t even switch on. If you’re not getting any power on the electric scooter, may be the battery is empty. And the solution to that problem is to recharge it.
The scooter battery needs time to charge, let the scooter battery charge until the charger or the display on the scooter indicates it has been fully charged.
You can go further checking the charging status of the battery using a multimeter to see if your battery is charged or not.
Blown or Flipped Fuse
In case the scooter have a ignition fuse blowing the scooter won't run.
Replace the main fuse if you note that is blown out.
Some scooters have other fuses that are not in the main power line, sometimes to protect the inlet to the battery, in this case the fuse is not responsible if the scooter doesn't run.
No acceleration
Even when you accelerate, it seems like the scooter goes slow or not at all. That is maybe because it is not getting the power to the wheels.
This is maybe a faulty electrical controller, throttle or main fuse problem. Either there is some sort of electrical issue with the scooter. Or you might have blown the main fuse.
Getting a professional’s help is a must as the mechanical issue can be too complex to handle on your own.
Controller problems
An electrical board is in your scooter. We call it “the controller”. If water, any liquid or other substance goes on it, this will make a short circuit that will cause the engine trouble at getting started.
You need to get help from technicians who know what to do. Only in cases like a loosened wire, loose connector, you can try to fix them by yourself. Check for if any got popped out from its place.
Brake Lever
Like the main switch, the brake lever switch that can cause a problem. This one connects directly to the throttle control system of the scooter. If it is on, it will deactivate the entire system of your ride.
So, check it is not on (like lever stuck or loose) first when you try to start the engine. Also, make sure the wiring doesn’t come loose on it.
The Battery
When the scooter’s power gets cut off, there can be two reasons for it. The first one is obviously that the battery ran out of power. The other one is some electrical problem with the scooter.
For the first one, in order to see the battery charge level, you have to use a multimeter. If you note the battery gets empty fast even after getting fully charged every time, then it’s time to replace it. The capacity of its holding charge has terminated.
If after testing, you found that the battery charge is ok and the scooter does not run, If that’s the case, then you’ve got some connection issue, controller or throttle problems which is why the motor can’t receive the battery power.
In that case, check for the dirty connectors and find any loose wire. If you can’t find something, you must get help from technicians.
Loose Connection
One way to identify an unfastened or loose wire is to see if your scooter loses connection when you hit a bump, jump, pothole or go down a curb. To solve this problem, check deck compartments and battery cables to find any possible loose connections or wires out of their place. If you can’t find the problem yourself, then take help from a technician.
Faulty Motor
If the moisture goes into the engine it can make it stop working.
If you have submerged the scooter in water. Or if you leave your scooter in the rain or direct a hose towards it, may be a motor damage.
In this case, you should go to a mechanic for help as it is something that you shouldn’t try to fix on your own.
